Twenty holidays back home will teach you less than ninety ordinary days. Holidays are curated — everyone hosts you, the generator always works, and nobody expects you at a school gate by 7:30am. Before you sell a house, move a family or commit your savings to a build, run a 90-day test run. Here’s how to design one that actually answers the question.
Before you read on: if you are not sure how exposed you are right now, take the free 3-minute Diaspora Readiness Scorecard. Twelve questions, and you will know your riskiest gap before you speak to anyone else.
Why 90 days, specifically
Thirty days is still a long holiday. Ninety days forces the real curriculum: paying utilities, surviving the commute, finding a plumber on a Tuesday, the rainy season’s effect on your street, what a normal food week costs, and how work-from-home actually performs on local internet. It’s also long enough for the honeymoon to end — which is the data you came for.
Designing the test run
Where do YOU actually stand?
Most diaspora investors can’t name their gaps until it’s expensive. The free 3-minute Wealth Readiness Scorecard shows you yours — before money moves.
- Pick the real neighbourhood, not the resort. Rent a modest place in the exact area you’d live — same commute, same market, same water pressure.
- Live on the real budget. Set your future monthly budget and stick to it. Track everything for the full 90 days; your spreadsheet is the deliverable.
- Run your work for real. If your plan is remote work, keep your actual job hours the whole time. If it’s a business, spend the 90 days doing customer discovery, not decoration.
- Test the systems that will carry your life. Healthcare: register and do one routine appointment. Banking: open the account, use it daily. Transport: your actual routes at actual rush hours.
- Do school runs if you have kids. Visit shortlisted schools in session, not in holidays. Ask about mid-year entry and fees in writing.
- Meet the obligations early. Extended family will have expectations of the returned relative. Ninety days shows you their real shape — and lets you set patterns deliberately rather than by accident.
- Keep a weekly verdict journal. Every Sunday, one page: what worked, what ground you down, what surprised you, would you sign another month?
What the test run tells you about property
Most people’s building plans change after 90 days of living locally — the “perfect” area from holiday memory turns out to flood, or be an hour from everything, or cost double per square metre versus the district you never considered. That’s exactly why we recommend renting before building in the 12-month relocation checklist — and why land bought before a test run should only ever be bought with the full verification file complete.

The verdict framework
- Green: budget held, work worked, family patterns sustainable → proceed to the phased move.
- Amber: it works with changes — different area, bigger buffer, different school. Adjust the plan, not the dream.
- Red: the honest answer is “not yet” or “not like this”. A £3k test run that prevents a £100k mistake is the best investment you’ll ever make back home.
Frequently asked questions
Can I do a test run while keeping my job abroad?
Often yes — remote arrangements, sabbaticals, or accumulated leave stacked with unpaid leave. Frame it to your employer as a fixed window with full availability; many say yes to ninety days who’d refuse forever.
What does a 90-day test run cost?
Rent for three months in your target area, flights, and your normal living costs — for most cities meaningfully less than one bad property decision. Build it as a line in the relocation budget, not as a luxury.
What if my spouse is convinced and I’m not (or vice versa)?
That’s the strongest argument FOR the test run: it converts a debate about imagination into a shared review of evidence. Do it together, keep separate journals, compare verdicts at the end.
Test first. Commit second.
Process beats optimism — in moving home just as in buying land. See where your overall readiness stands with the free Wealth Readiness Scorecard, and if property will follow your test run, the Diaspora Toolkit is the verification system waiting for that day.
